The Islamabad-Rawalpindi Metro was developed in a strategic manner in order to connect the twin cities and serve the commuters in a settled manner. It was planned out back in 2010, but the real work began in January 2014. In this regard, the then prime minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, and Chief Minister of Punjab Shahbaz Sharif counter-signed the agreement on a 50-50 distribution of the project on behalf of the Federal and Provincial Governments.
Nawaz Sharif has been very successful in developing this particular project as he had already made it big in the Lahore project as well where he grabbed the screaming attention of CM Punjab.
The project however was completed in June 2015, had a total cost of about 46 billion Rupees, and was then made available to the masses. Initially, there were a lot of negatives regarding the developmental part which the opposition threw at the project. But overall, it enhanced the value of the locals in terms of their riding experience.
Line:1 It has the route extending from Saddar to Pak Secretariat and has a total of 24 stations serving the route.
Line:2 The newly extended Phase-II will pass on from Peshawar Morr to Islamabad International Airport.
